Bikesafe 2009

You've probably been told countless times how dangerous biking is, but have you ever wondered
whether this is actually true?

Well consider this:-

  • 20% of all road deaths and serious injuries involve motorcyclists
  • Motorcycles only make up 1% of all vehicles on UK roads

That puts motorcycle safety into stark perspective don't you think?

During 2004 -2005 in South Yorkshire there were about 910 motorcycle casualties. Of these, 22 died, 263 were seriously injured and 633 were slightly injured. We think that is far too many for one county and we intend to reduce these figures through our BIKESAFE campaign!

BikeSafe is a national, Police-led initiative intending to increase awareness of road safety and create a desire to learn about safer riding. The main thrust of the initiative is to reduce road casualties. South Yorkshire Police's BIKESAFE campaign will contain information on real life needs including:-

Attitudes Collision Causation
Positioning Observations
Hazard Perception System of Bike Control
Cornering Overtaking
Braking Correct Use Of Gears

Our BIKESAFE workshops include classroom sessions, on-road observed rides with Police advanced motorcyclists and input relating to first aid issues, crash scene management and crime prevention.

BIKESAFE will give each participant:

  • A taste of safer riding techniques
  • A training needs assessment
  • A certification of completion
  • An opportunity to benefit from incentives

Most importantly BIKESAFE will help to identify motorcyclists' strengths and weaknesses in preparation for training by recognised providers. The courses cost £50.00 to cover administration charges and lunch and any left over money will go to fund future BIKESAFE initiatives.
