New for 2012 - BikeSafe NI is a FREE assessment.
BikeSafe NI is an initiative run by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), with support from motorcycle industry partners, aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle related casualties.
Over 30,000 people on average are killed or seriously injured in the UK every year while using a motorcycle. Motorcycle users account for almost a quarter of all road deaths (22%). “Fatality rates per passenger are highest for motorcyclists, regardless of whether this is measured on a per kilometre, per journey or per hour basis – around 40 to 60 times greater than the equivalent rate for car users.” – Department for Transport – Road Casualties Great Britian: 2007
Every motorcycle casualty is a death too many, and while there will always be an element of danger connected with riding a motorcycle, our mission is to work with the whole of the biking world to radically reduce this unacceptable waste of human life.
Unfortunately as Traffic Officers we witness the aftermath of many crashes, not just the physical damage but also the pain and anguish that family and friends suffer following a sudden death or serious injury. It is with this in mind that we make no apology for being both enthusiastic and passionate in our efforts to improve Road Safety for all road users, particularly the most vulnerable which includes motorcyclists.
BikeSafe NI assessments are FREE and conducted solely by PSNI Advanced Traffic Branch motorcyclists. By passing on their knowledge, skills and experience, police motorcyclists can advise you on how to become a safer, more competent rider and help you avoid some of the most common causes of accident and death.
They can also help you to increase your ability and confidence, so you can get even more enjoyment from riding your motorcycle.
The BikeSafe concept is designed to get the rider thinking, subsequently developing riding skills, which creates more time for the rider to react. Motorcycle riders have a great deal to think about, as road and traffic conditions change continuously requiring constant alterations to speed and position.
Although it is particularly suitable for riders returning or making a return to biking after a period of absence, as well as sports bike riders, the one-hour assessment is also open to anyone who rides a smaller commuter bike or scooter.
One of the main lessons you will learn will be how to identify your mistakes and bad habits, their consequences and how you can correct them.
BikeSafe is not about learning how to pop wheelies or grind your knee slider into atoms – it’s about fostering a more responsible attitude towards your riding.
It is within the power of every motorcycle rider to do what they can to help reduce the number of deaths on our roads. Whilst it is our primary concern to help you achieve this, we also spend some time focusing on the positive side of motorcycling.
We recognise that motorcyclists are a passionate breed, and care deeply about their bikes and the enjoyment they derive from them. All we ask is that they care even more about preserving their own and other road user lives, so that they can continue to ride for many more years to come.

Take road safety a step further, do the IAM’s Advanced Riding Test!
Many motorcyclists who’ve completed the BikeSafe assessment challenge themselves by completing the IAM’s Advanced Riding Test. Its main focus is on progressive riding and staying one step ahead of other road users by knowing how to predict hazards and accurately assess road and traffic conditions. Once a rider passes the IAM Advanced Riding Test, they’ll be a more controlled, confident and ultimately, an even better rider. You’re therefore likely to enjoy further reductions on your motorcycle insurance premium.
