Bikesafe Northern Ireland
2007 has been another successful year for the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Bikesafe scheme with over 400 local motorcyclists availing of a FREE assessment.
Based on professional riding techniques and designed to enhance the skills of riders who have already passed their test, topics covered include the system of motorcycle control, collision causation factors and bike security.
Although it is particularly suitable for riders returning to biking after a period of absence and sports bike riders, the 1-hour assessment is also open to those using smaller commuter bikes and scooters.
Bikesafe is about encouraging riders to adopt a responsible attitude in significantly reducing their mistakes and the consequences of them. We won’t teach you to grind your knee slider into atoms or to ride with your front wheel in the air, but through a little training and education we will hopefully pass on our experience to make you a more competent rider.
A small number of motorcyclists, some of them unlicensed and uninsured, feel they have the right to engage in reckless and anti-social behaviour on the road. Unfortunately, such activity reflects badly on the biking fraternity as a whole in the eyes of the wider community.
2007 produced an unacceptable rise in the number of motorcyclist fatalities on the road. 25 riders lost their lives in the carnage – up from 14 in each of the previous two years - and motorcycling is fast approaching a crossroads.
Crashes are bad business for insurance companies, and if the casualty count continues to rise then the implications could be very severe indeed. Government could be prompted to impose further restrictions on the motorcycle industry; insurance premiums could become unaffordable; or worse still, some insurers could withdraw their bike cover provision altogether.
Even if that does sound like a nightmare scenario, it pales into insignificance when compared to the loss of a single life on our increasingly dangerous roads.
Despite the harsh reality of the statistics, the Bikesafe initiative tries to focus on the positive side of motorcycling.
The Bikesafe Team in Northern Ireland will be working very hard in partnership with all members of the motorcycling community in Northern Ireland in an attempt to significantly reduce the huge cost in riders’ lives during 2008.
The calendar of events listed is reaching out to bikers right across Northern Ireland. Starting with the Motorcycle Show at the Kings Hall in Belfast, through the North West 200 festival, and on into the summer and autumn months. All road users need to be and remain focused.
The Kennedy International North West 200 in May will see the Police Service link up with the organising Coleraine and District Motor Club, Honda UK, BMW Motorad, Kawasaki UK, Adelaide Insurance Services, Blackhorse Motorcycle Finance, Bridgestone Tyres, BBC Northern Ireland, P & O Irish Sea, Stena Line, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, Race Teams and Riders to promote a safe motor sport spectacle for everyone.
Free assessments will be available during race week on a booking system, after that first come first served, so book early to avoid disappointment.
The message will be simple during 2008:
Keep the Speed on the Track – Leave the Racing to the Racers!!!
If you think you would benefit from an assessment then give Bill Holden a call on 02838 366 109.
Bikesafe NI is a Rider Skills Assessment – not Advanced Training.
That part is up to you!!
