Welcome to the webpage for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Bikesafe
The end of 2009 hasn’t been very favourable weather for motorcyclists and the year appears to have gone very quickly. Fatal collisions involving power two wheeled vehicles in 2009 have reduced considerably over the figures reported in 2008, there have been 9 fatalities opposed to 25 during the previous year, this is a huge reduction in casualties and we know that there have been the usual numbers on the roads during the period of recession.
The full confirmed statistics will be announced in the Department for Transport Road Casualties Great Britain 2009 which becomes available in June 2010 and can be obtained through the DfT website.
From the statistics for the two counties it shows that 65% of all motorcycle collisions happen at or near a junction, 35% of these show that other vehicle drivers failed to appreciate or assess the path of the Motorcyclist on the main road.
Bikesafe Workshops 2010
A structured workshop in a partnership approach with Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services supported by the Highways Agency to deliver rider awareness and assessment workshops is now in place and the response that we received in 2009 was overwhelming and very positive from those that attended workshops. Here are just a few replies;-
“Thanks for a great day you guys are craftsmen. It was a pleasure to be part of it and I learnt so much. I am now enquiring about the RoSPA riding courses and I think others will follow.
Your presentations were brilliant not like others I have to go to where I fall asleep. The riding was fantastic and I hope we all put on a good show for a load of old Harley riders. Hope to meet up with you guys again (not in an official capacity of course) Again thank you it was well worth the time and investment.
If only more would attend”
I attended the course that was run today from the Fire Station at Eastleigh.
I just wanted to drop you a quick message to say that I was thoroughly impressed by the entire team involved in the presentation. Having spent 3 1/2 years struggling with cornering, I have ridden away today with a dramatic improvement not only in my cornering but overall riding.
I was a little apprehensive about what the day was going to be like as I haven't had any real assessment since passing my bike test some 24 years ago I would like to thank you for such an 'easy - paced' relaxed atmosphere you provided in the morning. The information and interactivity with us all evoked some good questions and the morning flew by, I thoroughly enjoyed it, many thanks. |
The most common themes that are present in many collisions are:-
- Other vehicles emerging from junctions into the path of a rider
- Motorcycles overtaking other vehicles on the approach to a junction
- Filtering through traffic on motorways and dual carriageways at inappropriate speeds
- Group Riding
All of these hazards could be reduced if riders use a systematic approach to how they ride, Bikesafe aims to give information to riders to reduce the risk of being involved in a collision.
Whether you drive or ride take extra care on the approach to hazards such as junctions or garage/pub forecourts. Overtake safely after the junction or entrance. |

Mopeds
Mopeds are great little things to buzz around on as a new rider at the age of 16 but still pose a huge potential for serious injury collisions. So many riders will de restrict the engine so that it is capable of exceeding the 30mph speed under the Driver Licensing restrictions. Some riders have already faced having their ped seized for “Riding Other than in Accordance with a Drivers Licence”.
Hampshire has the availability of a Dynostar 2 SP Dynamometer which can be used to test the maximum speed output of a moped and will be operating all around the county. Since we have had this equipment we have tested 68 mopeds and seized 48 due to them being derestricted and therefore the rider has had the wrong category of licence.
