Welcome to the web page of Bikesafe for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

The start of the new biking season will soon be upon us, 2008 was a poor year for motorcycle related collisions in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, 24 riders and 1 child pillion passenger have lost their lives through motorcycle related collisions and at least 8 riders suffered potentially life threatening injuries that will change their lives for ever. The number of fatalities from motorcycles is around 35% of the total of all vehicle collisions.

The confirmed statistics will be announced in the Department for Transport Road Casualties Great Britain 2008 which becomes available in June 2009. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight details will be up dated when they are available in detail.

From the statistics for the two counties it shows that 65% of all motorcycle collisions happen at or near a junction, 35% of these show that other vehicle drivers failed to appreciate or assess the path of the Motorcyclist on the main road.

The most common themes that are present in many collisions are:-

  1. Other vehicles emerging from junctions into the path of a rider
  2. Motorcycles overtaking other vehicles on the approach to a junction
  3. Filtering through traffic on motorways and dual carriageways at inappropriate speeds
  4. Group Riding

All of these hazards could be reduced if riders use a systematic approach to how they ride, Bikesafe aims to give information to riders to reduce the risk of being involved in a collision.

Whether you drive or ride take extra care on the approach to hazards such as junctions or garage/pub forecourts. Overtake safely after the junction or entrance.

Bikesafe 2009 in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has changed !

New for 2009 will be a structured workshop in a partnership approach with Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Fire and rescue Services to deliver a rider awareness and assessment scheme.

The response that we received in 2008 was overwhelming and a very positive response from those that attended workshops. Here are just a few replies:

“I've just got back from my Bikesafe day at J2 Honda.
I was a little apprehensive about what the day was going to be like as I haven't had any real assessment since passing my bike test some 24 years ago I would like to thank you for such an 'easy - paced' relaxed atmosphere you provided in the morning. The information and interactivity with us all evoked some good questions and the morning flew by, I thoroughly enjoyed it, many thanks.

The ride assessment session in the afternoon with Drew was also superb and he explained the 'why's and wherefores' in such a manner that made me relax quickly and enjoy the afternoon. His assessment of my riding has given me the confidence to approach an advanced training scheme”.

“Thanks for a great day you guys are craftsmen. It was a pleasure to be part of it and I learnt so much. I am now enquiring about the RoSPA riding courses and I think others will follow.

Your presentations were brilliant not like others I have to go to where I fall asleep. The riding was fantastic and I hope we all put on a good show for a load of old Harley riders. Hope to meet up with you guys again (not in an official capacity of course) Again thank you it was well worth the time and investment.

If only more would attend”

“I attended the course that was run today from the Novotel Hotel, Southampton.

I just wanted to drop you a quick message to say that I was thoroughly impressed by the entire team involved in the presentation. Having spent 3 1/2 years struggling with cornering, I have ridden away today with a dramatic improvement not only in my cornering but overall riding.

The officer in charge of my assessment was Martin, a very approachable gentleman and a pleasure to learn tips from him.

Mopeds

Mopeds are great little things to buzz around on as a new rider at the age of 16 but still pose a huge potential for serious injury collisions. So many riders will de restrict the engine so that it is capable of exceeding the 30mph speed under the Driver Licensing restrictions. Some riders have already faced having their ped seized for “Riding Other than in Accordance with a Drivers Licence”.

Hampshire have the availability of a Dynostar 2 SP Dynamometer which can be used to test the maximum speed output of a moped and will be operating all around the county during 2009.
