In West Yorkshire BikeSafe is conducted by officers from the Motorcycle Unit. These officers are all highly trained police motorcyclists who have been on a 4 week advanced motorcycle course. These officers are doing it because they have a genuine desire to help you improve as a motorcyclist, to improve your enjoyment of riding, not because they are being paid to do it. There is no hidden agenda, this is motorcyclists helping other motorcyclists.
The Bikesafe initiative is a nationwide plan of action to reduce the number of motorcycle accident casualties by promoting safer riding.
The day is split into 2 sessions:
The first session of the course will be classroom based where we will go through the BikeSafe DVD presentation. This is an interactive DVD covering variety of topics including hazard awareness, filtering, cornering and overtaking.
After lunch it will be a road based session of approximately 3hrs. The ride will be tailored to what you want from it. The maximum ratio of Police staff to attendees will be 1-2.
Every rider receives feedback following the ride. You will be given tips and pointers on how you could improve your riding.
We consider this to be and observed ride rather than any formal training. Due to the fact that BikeSafe is “Bridging the Gap” you will be encouraged to take up further advanced training.
There are 10 courses planned for 2010 on the following dates.
The courses will run from the West Yorkshire Police Operations Complex at Wakefield.
