Welcome to BikeSafe Durham. We know that our county provides some of the best roads in the country for enjoying your motorcycle, so our aim is to provide you with the skills and knowledge to enable you to be able to do so in a safe and appropriate manner and ultimately to reduce collisions involving motorcycles.

It can be proven that the risk of being involved in a collision can be reduced by taking part in some form of advanced riding or driving. BikeSafe is intended to introduce participants to some of the advanced skills Police Motorcyclists achieve through their training and to bridge the gap between the skills you learned upon gaining your bike licence and those you’ll gain should you choose to attend a workshop to undergo advanced rider training in the future.

Our workshops are delivered to you by current, experienced Police Advanced Motorcyclists from Durham Constabulary, all of whom are also advanced car drivers. The day will provide you with a great opportunity to have your motorcycle skills assessed, in particular with regard to identifying areas of risk, which will hopefully make you a safer and more skilled motorcyclist.

Workshop information

BikeSafe Durham workshops are delivered from the Training Centre, Federation Offices in Meadowfield, Co.Durham, and are open to anyone holding a full motorcycle licence. The courses will range from 6-10 participants depending on our availability, after all our Police Motorcyclists are still operational officers as well!

The one-day workshop will include a morning theory class introducing you to BikeSafe and discussions around some of the theories applied to motorcycling. Following a short break, you will then go out on the road for 3-4 hours, generally two riders per police observer, covering a range of roads and with plenty of opportunity to stop and obtain feedback (and lunch!), before a final course debrief at the training centre.

The day is relaxed, so if there is a particular area of riding that you’d like us to concentrate on, please just let us know. This won’t be a lecture, we encourage discussion and rider participation throughout!

You will need to bring:

• A road-worthy bike in excess of 125cc
• Your driving licence
• Proof of insurance
• Appropriate clothing, including an approved helmet and visor, a motorcycle jacket and gloves.

At the conclusion of the session you will receive your course debrief and a BikeSafe goody bag, and following this you’ll also receive confirmation of your attendance together with formal feedback from BikeSafe written by your Police Observer. We look forward to welcoming you on a BikeSafe workshop soon, but don’t leave it too long as our courses tend to fill up quickly.
