Workshop Requirements/Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend a Cleveland andDurham BikeSafe workshop? You must be the holder of a category A, A1 or A2 license. All motorcyclists are welcome, but BikeSafe is not aimed at those who have already passed an advanced motorcycle test. If you have only just passed your test you would benefit from getting a few months of riding experience without ‘L’ plates before attending your BikeSafe workshop.

What bikes are suitable? Most types of motorcycle are welcome ie. Category A1 light motorcycle, Category A2 restricted motorcycle or category A unrestricted motorcycle. BikeSafe is not suitable for mopeds or 125 cc learner bikes. Category A1 bikes that are not learner and are capable of national speed limits are welcome. Whatever bike you bring it must be in a legal roadworthy condition.

What do I need to bring? We strongly recommend that you wear some proper motorcycle kit and a road legal helmet. Be prepared to ride out in all weather conditions except for thick fog or snow and ice.

Will I need my driving documents? Yes. Please do not forget to bring your driving license, certificate of insurance and M.O.T Test certificate if required. You will not be able to take part without them. All documents will be checked prior to your assessed ride.

Will it be tiring? In a word – yes. Fatigue adversely affects concentration, so please ensure you have sufficient rest prior to your workshop.

The consumption of alcohol, substances, medications – prescription or otherwise which may impair riding ability must be avoided prior to your workshop. Please inform us of any medical conditions or special requirements you have in sufficient time for reasonable adjustments to be considered and implemented where possible.

Is there an eyesight test? Yes prior to the on-road element of your day there is a simple eyesight test, with corrective lenses if required, to comply with the Road Traffic Act.

How to find us – Our 2016 workshops are held at our Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit base, Weslyan Road, Spennymoor, DL16 6FB. From the A688 Spennymoor by bass follow the signs for Town Centre. Turn right at the mini roundabout then take the 1st right into Weslyan Road. Follow the road to the end, past LIDL on your right and the Police Station is right in front of you.

Parking – Secure parking in the Police Station back yard for the duration of the workshop.
