PC Kevin Garner is based at Cockett Police Station in Swansea and is the lead Bikesafe co-ordinator for the South Wales Police force area. He joined the police force in 1996 after jobs in the construction industry and as a health & safety officer and has worked on traffic for nearly six years. With five biker brothers it was inevitable that Kevin would end up on two wheels and combine his hobby with his job. As a police advanced motorcyclist and car driver with VIP grade, Kevin is frequently called upon to escort rugby and football teams, royalty (including the Queen), high profile dignitaries and celebrities around South Wales.

Kevin became involved with Bikesafe five years ago to help improve rider skills and knowledge and to pass on some of his experiences from working on traffic. Bikes take up much of his spare time too. When not keeping the roads in Swansea safe, Kevin is a qualified CBT instructor, passing on his experience to wannabee bikers. Bikes aside, Kevin enjoys diving, running and playing squash. And the best bit of motorcycling advice ever given – always be willing to learn and never overestimate your ability!

I am a keen motorcyclist both socially and professionally and have a vast knowledge of the roads in Gwent and surrounding mid-wales regions. I am an operational police motorcyclist with Gwent police and have been so for a number of years. I am a grade 1 advanced police motorcyclist and feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to be trained to this level. I am a keen motorcyclist and like most bikers enjoy the open roads we are lucky enough to have been blessed with here in Wales, probably some of the best roads in the country. I have always been a huge fan of the Bikesafe workshops and always enjoyed taking part in them, I believe they offer an insight into advanced motorcycle training and benefit all riders, from new riders, born again riders all the way up to very experienced riders. In my experience the feedback from participants has always been positive, such as “Best biking weekend I have ever had” is the usual comment! Civilian Motorcycle Co-ordinator with North Wales Police

I began to ride motorcycles from the age of 14yrs. Up to date I have owned approximately eighty motorcycles of different styles. Some limited off road and track experience although I appreciated the benefits of both. At the age of 16yrs my first road legal powered two-wheeled vehicle was a ‘Norman Nippy’ moped that reached the dizzy speeds of 26mph or so. Being passed by pedal cyclists was not cool! The feeling of freedom was priceless. I still managed to fall off it! I passed my DSA test in 1973. My first proper bike was a triton Special 650cc triumph pre unit engine in a Norton frame. I fell off that too! I presently own a Varadero 1000 and Blackbird 1100 but have the use of two STX 1300’S for work. Following a short career in tourism and cooking I realised I wasn’t going anywhere and had lost my appetite so applied to join the North Wales Police Force.

I served as a beat constable from 1975 until 1984 when i joined the then named traffic Department working the roads of the Western Division from Bangor to Holyhead and Dolgellau. I remained on that department until my retirement in 2005. Being on the department necessitated that I attend many advanced training courses to drive cars and ride motorcycles. I achieved and retained a class 1 advanced qualification for both car and motorcycle. This also enabled me to perform duty as a convoy Protection officer for VIP visits. In 1987 I began to run ‘Rider improvement’ sessions. This became infectious and I also obtained external qualification as an examiner for RoSPA, IAM, Midas, The Edge (MCI) and qualified as a CBT instructor.

As part of my road policing duties I took on additional responsibilities as a Family liaison officer. I currently represent BikeSafe Cymru and work closely with my colleagues from the other Welsh forces. I feel privileged and passionate to have been involved with the motorcycle community which makes no distinction between occupation or position only the bike you ride. My work provides me with great satisfaction and has developed many friendships along the way.

I have 18 years’ service as a Police officer in Dyfed Powys Police within the Ceredigion division at Aberystwyth, Lampeter and then Cardigan, 15 and a half of which was on traffic. I was promoted to Sergeant 6 years ago and have been a Roads Policing Unit Sergeant for the last 4 years I am based in Cardigan Police station and am Advanced motorcar and motorcycle trained as well as being Car and Motorcycle VIP Protection driver trained. I became Bikesafe Co-Ordinator for Dyfed Powys Police in 2012.
