Hertfordshire BikeSafe workshops

Hertfordshire Constabulary has run BikeSafe events for many years which have proved very popular amongst riders, working in conjunction with our collaborated forces; Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Police provide two day workshops to delegates on various dates throughout the season, starting in March, running through until October.  Our aim is to reduce motorcycle casualties by increasing riders’ hazard awareness and give an opportunity to have a greater awareness of their skill level whilst maintaining the fun and enjoyable element of riding on the open road.  Our workshop days are run by Police Advanced motorcyclists, including our driving school instructors, all of whom are dedicated riders both on and off duty. They have all volunteered to take part and be involved in BikeSafe owing to their passion for all things bikes and aim to create a fun, relaxed  and engaging learning environment. We look to encourage riders who attend BikeSafe to then take up advanced rider training, and progress to the next step in professional riding.

This year Hertfordshire will again be hosting combined BikeSafe and BikerDown workshops, in conjunction with our colleagues at Herts Fire and Rescue Service.  The combined workshops deliver all the content from BikeSafe as well as BikerDown modules covering initial response to a Road Traffic Collision; keeping yourself safe, first aid and calling for help.  The course also covers the ‘science of being seen’ and how to plan ahead to cover all eventualities when planning a trip!  The workshops are delivered in a fun and engaging environment, and delegates are encouraged to join in conversations and learn from their own experiences, as others in the room.  We welcome riders of all abilities and experience with full or restricted power licences to our workshops and over the course of recent years have provided courses to complete novices with no riding experience beyond their test pass, up to IAM members who are looking at honing their skills and refreshing their ride for the new season.  We work with local IAM groups to inspire and encourage riders to sign up and further improve their riding.

The theory workshops start at around 09:00 and are held at the Joint Emergency Services Academy, A602 Hitchin Road, Stevenage SG1 4BH (delegates are advised not to follow satnav instructions to the postcode, as this will direct them to a nearby housing estate!). Tea and coffee is provided, however lunch is not, delegates are advised to bring food with them. Our workshops follow the national BikeSafe modules, and the workshop will be broken down into each of these modules, giving us a chance to discuss further, the points raised in each of the videos. Which remain available to you before and after your workshop.

The two day workshops offer observed rides at a ration of 2:1 on a range of dates following your theory workshop, observed rides will take approximately three hours, during which time you will have the opportunity to follow and be followed by an advanced police motorcyclist. Remember, we ride in most weathers, so please make sure you dress appropriately for your observed ride!
