Sussex BikeSafe

Sussex BikeSafe is a partnership between Sussex Police and other road safety professionals. The scheme is a national police led initiative which seeks to engage with motorcyclists in a conflict free environment in an attempt to reduce those killed or seriously injured on the roads. The aim is to give riders, using the roads of Sussex, an insight into what can be achieved by exploring advanced riding techniques. So whether if it’s a shiny cruiser or a tricked up sports machine, Sussex BikeSafe is for all.

The friendly, down to earth team, are experienced emergency service personnel who are passionate about riding and look to provide those riders who attend the workshops with an informative and enjoyable day. If you are a rider and are serious about staying safe on the roads or fancy polishing the skills that you already possess, book onto a Sussex BikeSafe course now and have a great day out.

Workshop content

Prior to attending the classroom theory and practical ride-out you will get access to learning content giving you an insight into the System of Control. This is a principle adopted by advanced Police drivers and riders across the UK. On the day you will then have a 90-minute theory input around the 5 phases of Control, (IPSGA). This theory input will give a greater depth of understanding around how we position ourselves within the road to maximise our view. The system, which if used correctly will make your ride not only safer but puts you in good stead for further advanced training should you chose. The theory input also covers filtering, overtaking observation and a whole range of other topics that will make you a more confident and safer rider.

Your morning Sussex BikeSafe workshop starts at 08:00 and runs through to approximately 12:30. If you are booked on an afternoon assessment this will start at around 13:00 to around 17:30 with a maximum of 8 riders on each session. There will be a safety briefing and some admin. You will then be introduced to the team and we find out a little about you as a rider. We then talk about what you want to achieve out of the course to give you the best possible experience. Whether it be cornering, overtaking, filtering or just an overall observation of your ride we will do our upmost to make you end the day a more confident and safer rider!

Need Proof? The first course of 2024 saw 15 riders through the programme!

James told us “Amazing day out today with Pete, Bikesafe Sussex. I learnt so much, such a worthwhile course. Pete is a great teacher…. I highly recommend the course and yes…. He let me sit on his bike! 😊

Live East of the county?  – Don’t panic! We have no released dates for workshops to be run from Bexhill Police Station in September and October!!
